Disc Golf Tournament to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City will be hosting it’s first Disc Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 18 at the Thornfield Disc Golf Course in Stilwell, Kansas. Teams of 4 will participate in an 18 hole, fun, non-competitive disc golf tournament. The registration fee is $200 for a team of 4. Participants are provided with a T-shirt, cooler of cold beverages and a disc. The shotgun start will begin at 2:00 p.m.  More

Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser, Summer Bowl for Kids’ Sake raises $340,633
Kansas City, Mo. -- (July 29, 2010) — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City wrapped up it’s annual fundraiser, Summer Bowl for Kids Sake last weekend. The event raised $340,633 with money still being pledged until the end of the month. This is an increase of $40,000 from 2009 and $80,000 from 2010. Nearly 1,600 people participated in this event with the average team raising $1,295 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The event was sponsored by QuikTrip.  More

Kansas City residents Bowl for Kids’ Sake to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters
Today, July 7, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City will kick off their largest fundraiser of the year, Summer Bowl for Kids’ Sake at Lunar Bowl in Blue Springs. Summer Bowl for Kids’ Sake is an 8-day fundraiser that raises money to match at-risk kids with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The event is the biggest bowl-a-thon in the city and attracts 2,000 participants each year. This year’s goal is $330,000. Sessions run Wednesday, July 7–Friday, July 9 and again Thursday, July 15–Saturday, July 17. VIP sessions will be held on Tuesday, July 20 and Thursday, July 22 at Lucky Strike and are for teams that raise $2,500 or more. Bowling times are at 7:00 p.m. on July 7-8, 6:30 and 8:15 July 9, 15-17 and 6:00 & 7:30 on July 20 & 22.  More

KANSAS CITY, MO (April 16, 2009) – A volunteer group called Organizing KC, who started as an Obama volunteer group, will begin supporting a new cause this weekend – Big Brothers Big Sisters. The volunteer group will go door-to-door in Brookside, Waldo and Plaza neighborhoods on April 18 leaving collection bags with area residents. Big Brothers Big Sisters Exceeds Record Numbers in October
Kansas City, Mo. -- (November 6, 2007) — October was a record setting month for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City. The staff matched 53 children with adult mentors, which is an all-time high for one month. The agency now has 821 active matches and has served 1,182 children to date in 2007, also record numbers. BBBS-KC received 76 volunteer applications and accepted 60 new volunteers in October.  More

Lt. Governor Peter Kinder Backs Mentoring Initiative at NLGA Convention
Williamsburg, Virginia- Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder attended the National Lieutenant Governors Association’s annual conference, and presented a resolution that championed the use of mentoring programs in all states. Kinder suggested that states use the Missouri Model as a guide and then adapt it to the needs of each individual state. The resolution was passed unanimously.  More

Back in the mid-90’s, if you were looking for a poster child to represent at-risk youth, 10-year-old Ric McBath of Liberty certainly would have fit the bill. Raised by a single mother on welfare, Ric was lucky if he saw his father three or four times a year. Although he had two brothers and two sisters, Ric describes his family as “distant.” As for role models, neither of his brothers finished high school and they both ended up in jail. His sisters were depressed and angry at the world. They ran around with the wrong crowd and moved away from home as soon as they could.  More

Big Brothers Big Sisters Receives Grant to Mentor Children Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City (BBBS-KC) together with partner agencies in Jefferson City, Mo. and Columbia, Mo. was chosen to receive a $45,000 grant to mentor children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. BBBS-KC is one of six agencies selected nationwide to receive this grant by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.  More

BBBS Reaches 800 Community Matches
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City (BBBS-KC) who provide adult mentors to Kansas City youth reached a milestone in May by achieving a record amount of 800 community based matches. This marks the first time that BBBS-GKC has supported over 800 matches. Five years ago BBBS-GKC served approximately 400 community-based matches. It was then when BBBS-GKC set a goal of doubling the number of matches served every five years.  More

St. James United Methodist Church, MOVE UP and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City are joining forces to help stop the cycle of incarceration in Kansas City by providing one-to-one mentoring to children whose parents in prison.
