About our Volunteers
“Bigs” are adult volunteers who are at least 21 years old, have a driver’s license, can provide reliable transportation, and have a desire to be a friend to a child. Volunteers in our program can be a Big Brother, Big Sister, or, if a married couple would like to volunteer together, a Big Couple. A "Big" is a friend and a mentor, offering friendship and support to a Little Brother or Little Sister through a one-to-one relationship. Bigs and Littles spend two to four hours a week together for a minimum of one year.
To be accepted into the program, a volunteer must successfully complete the following steps:
- Attend an orientation and complete application packet
- Complete a written interview
- Provide three personal references and one employer reference
- Pass a national background check
- Complete an in-home assessment with a Case Manager
- Be approved by the BBBS screening committee
