Frequently Asked Questions

When do Bigs schedule outings with Littles?

Outings can be scheduled anytime.  We encourage each volunteer, parent, and child to be flexible to find a date that works for both the Big and the Little.

How long will it take to get matched?

It varies.   Volunteers are matched with children based on the needs and preferences of both the child and the volunteer.  The best way to help your child get matched is to check-in with your Case Manager regularly and to return all agency phone calls.

What happens if they don't get matched before their 15th birthday?

Our eligibility standards require that children on our waiting list be between the ages of eight and 14.   If your child turns 15 before being matched, we’ll do everything we can to find other agencies that can provide services for your family.

What are the requirements for a Volunteer?

To submit an application to volunteer with us, an applicant must be an insured driver over the age of 21 who has his or her own transportation.  For acceptance, a volunteer must complete the following steps:

  • Application
  • Orientation
  • Interview
  • Submit three personal and one professional reference
  • Pass a nationwide background check
  • Complete an in-home training and assessment with a Case Manager

What counties does BBBS-KC serve?

We serve Johnson and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas, and Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte, Johnson and Nodaway Counties in Missouri.

Why did he/she choose my child?

Volunteers choose Littles based on similar interests, a similar background, or a similar address.

How do I enroll my child in the program?

To be eligible, a child must be between the ages of eight and 14, not have regular contact with his or her absent parent, and, above all else, want to participate in the program.  To be admitted into the program, a child must:

  • Attend an orientation at BBBS with a parent or guardian
  • Allow BBBS to collect a brief school report from a teacher or counselor
  • Arrange for both child and parent to participate in an in-home interview with a Case Manager.
